Another approach is based on the construction of a system of indicators that can
reflect certain aspects of sustainable development and corresponds to the following
principal methodological approaches:
1) Sustainability indicators meet the following criteria: combining environmental,
social and economic aspects; have an unambiguous interpretation and quantitative
expression; rely on the system of national statistics; they are representative for
interregional comparisons; have a limited number;
2) The classification of indicators at meso-level has two features:
- types (state, dynamics, equilibrium and result);
- blocks (social, ecological, economic, ecological-economic, socio-economic,
ecological and socio-economic);
3) The classification of indicators at the macro level is carried out according to
certain problems. Indicators are constructed in order to give a quantitative description
of the selected problems, based only on the database of state statistics;
4) The development of the system of indicators at meso-level is carried out on the
basis of the improvement of the existing system depending on the objectives.
A system of indicators of the sustainability of land use development (Table 1) was
developed as a result of the improvement and classifications.
At the macro level, the use of all indicators of six blocks is not feasible, because
it significantly complicates the development of the model. However, for further
comparisons at the national level, we made appropriate calculations for each of the
blocks. An indicative model of sustainable land use development in Ukraine was
developed.
